Eyedentify Success

1 min read

Gloria Laycock, OBE, was the founding Director of the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College London (UCL), and ran UCL's Centre for Security & Crime Science. She is an internationally renowned expert in crime prevention, and especially situational approaches which seek to design out situations which provoke crime.

Professor Laycock recently made a statement regarding a global trend in crime rates dropping due in part to technology and information sharing.

This week Counties Manukau Police had unprecedented success as a result of working with Edentify, a cloud based sharing website which reiterates Professor Laycock’s research.

A well known offender was identified as being in a retail store by staff members.  After being uploaded to Eyedentify he was noted by the Counties Manukau Intelligence Unit  as breaching his bail conditions.  This was confirmed and he was arrested as a result.

This incident reiterates how well technology and information sharing is working for Police and indeed our community partners. Inspector Richard Middleton, District Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau Police says that ”technology provides us with a platform but it is the community partnerships that allow us to undertake these preventative actions.  We are working with retailer and Eyedentify in order to prevent prolific shoplifters from operating.”
