Christchurch Police are making enquiries into an alleged sexual assault in Sockburn this morning.
Police and Ambulance services were called to an address in Middlepark Road at around 10.50am after reports that a woman had been assaulted in her home.
The woman received medical treatment at the scene, and is now being cared for by family members.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says investigators are still working to confirm the details of exactly what has happened at the address.
"Our priority at the moment is the ongoing care of the victim and her family".
Police are seeking to locate and apprehend the offender. The man is described as aged in his 40s, with two missing front teeth, and possibly wearing a high-visibility vest.
"We are appealing for anyone who may have seen a person answering this description, or any other unusual activity in the Middlepark Road area between 10am and 11am this morning, to contact Police urgently.
"We would also like to hear from anyone in the area who has noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the vicinity over recent days and weeks, including unfamiliar people knocking on doors or visiting properties.
"The attacker was not known to the victim," Detective Senior Sergeant Sweeney says.
Up to 30 police have been working on the investigation this afternoon.
A scene examination is under way at the property and is expected to continue through to tomorrow.
The police will remain in the area in the next two days with talking to neighbours and residents in the area.
