West Coast Police in association with the New Zealand Transport Agency and Opus consultants are advising road users to have consideration for other road users following an incident on SH73 early this morning.
A truck and trailer ignored the “Chains Essential” signs and “Closed to Towing Vehicles” signs at Otira and continued over Arthur’s Pass. Shortly after the truck and trailer became stuck, blocking one lane for quite some time.
The driver’s actions in ignoring the warning signs has impacted on a large number of other transport related businesses and members of the public by causing unnecessary delays. The blockage also prevented road crews from working on the road.
Constable Paul O’Hara of the West Coast Highway Patrol said the warnings were put out to keep all road users safe during winter driving conditions and it was essential drivers took notice.
Police will be investigating any similar incidents and drivers may be charged or fined for their manner of driving.
