Drive to the conditions say Canterbury Police

Canterbury Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions to ensure everyone on the road can get to their destination safe.

During winter months motorists in the Canterbury region have to take into consideration the conditions such as possible wet and icy roads and snow.

“In recent weeks some of our rural roads have started to freeze and while grit is one way of minimising the risk the best way of reducing the risk is for drivers to modify their driving style and speed. Motorists need to take into account the fact that the friction that keeps cars on the road is reduced considerably in icy and wet conditions,” said Senior Sergeant Philip Dean, Highway Patrol Manager for Canterbury.

When driving in winter conditions Police advise motorists is to allow extra time for their journey, plan the route they are taking, take regular breaks, slow down and never drive impaired.

“Canterbury Police will be visible on the road across the region as we work to prevent road trauma by slowing people down and addressing bad driving behaviour,” said Sergeant Dean.
