Shortly before midday, Police responded to calls for help from two people performing CPR on a woman on rocks out in Owhiro Bay.
The woman's dive partner, members of the public and Police, assisted to bring her in to shore and continued CPR.
Despite the best efforts of all those involved, including Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene a short time ago.
No further details are available at this stage.
