Critically injured Hamilton baby transferred to Starship

1 min read

Hamilton Police investigating a domestic incident in which an eight-month-old baby suffered critical injuries have arrested a man but say their investigation remains in its formative stages.

Waikato Field Crime Manager, Acting Detective Inspector Mark Greene, said a 32-year-old man from the address where emergency services found the injured baby has been arrested and charged with assault on a child.

"This man will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.

"At this stage the baby remains in a critical condition and is likely to be transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital later today for more specialist care."

Mr Greene said the York St address where the baby was found remains under guard and will be the subject of a scene examination by forensic experts tomorrow.

"Currently it is not a case where Police are seeking specific answers as to what happened, more it is a case of identifying the questions we seek answers to and until such time as we have identified these it would be inappropriate to speculate further.

"The only thing further we can confirm is that this incident was one of a domestic nature and domestic violence is no respecter of class or station, it affects persons from all walks of life and our message is- there is plenty of help available, you just need to take the first step and ask for help."
