Cracking down on red light runners in Wellington

1 min read

Wellington Police are cracking down on red light runners and focusing on driver behaviour at intersections, as part of a focused prevention road safety operation throughout July.

Intersections are a leading factor in serious crashes in Wellington District and Police are urging all drivers to take extra care and be more aware of their surroundings – particularly in the city.

From Monday 11 July 2016, officers will be actively patrolling intersections in the city, focusing on high risk locations. Drivers who run a red light should expect to receive an infringement notice with a $150 fine.

Motorists caught using mobile phones, speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, or not wearing seat belts, can also expect to be penalised.

“Running a red light is dangerous and poses a genuine threat to the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” said Wellington response manager Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy. “The risks aren’t worth it.

“This is a reminder that anyone driving dangerously could be stopped anytime, anywhere. All road users have a responsibility to keep themselves and others safe.”

Wellington City Council is also highlighting the dangers of running a red light through its annual Stop on Red campaign.

Police is committed to reducing road trauma and crashes throughout New Zealand and operations based around prevention, education and enforcement are an effective way of doing this.
