The community of Rotorua has once again stepped up to the plate to provide information on drug activity that has helped Police to make 47 arrests over the past six weeks.
Police today concluded a six week operation focusing on drugs and organised crime which saw the execution of 45 search warrants at residential addresses across the city. The 47 people (men and women) arrested now face a total 97 charges; 15 of those charges relate to the dealing of the Class A controlled drug methamphetamine, and a number of those involved have known links to organised criminal gangs.
Methamphetamine, cannabis, firearms and stolen property including tools, bikes, TVs and computers have been recovered during the operation.
Acting Area Commander for Rotorua, Inspector Tim Anderson said: "Some of this operation has been made possible through valuable information we have received from the public either directly, or via the organisation Crimestoppers which guarantees anonymity for the caller. Through those phone calls, our communities are making it clear that they do not want the scourge of drugs on their doorstep and do not want the people they love exposed to the physical and psychological harm associated with drugs, or the violence and dishonesty offending that is committed to fund these enterprises and addictions."
Of particular concern is the number of children living in homes with parents and caregivers who are openly taking and selling drugs from their homes. It is estimated that there were children at approximately 60 per cent of the addresses targeted during this latest operation.
"This is not acceptable and doesn't bode well for the future of these children who are being exposed to dangerous chemicals and environments. We will continue to work with agencies such as CYFs to ensure the future safety of children," said Inspector Anderson.
