Update on Cloverlea incident

Police advise the operation in Cloverlea, Palmerston North, is continuing this morning, with staff committed to a safe resolution for all involved.

“Police would like to thank the local community for their continued patience and assistance as we work to resolve the situation, as we appreciate the disruption and inconvenience this is causing for people wanting to return to their homes and their normal routines. However, our absolute priority is ensuring the safety of the community and working towards a safe and peaceful resolution for everyone, including Caleb,” says Manawatu Area Commander Inspector Sarah Stewart.

“We’d also like to pass on a big thanks to the Maori Wardens, the local marae and the many other people who opened their doors overnight and today to help house and feed those who have been unable to return to their homes.”

Inspector Stewart said Police were taking a systematic and coordinated approach to clearing the area and finding Caleb.

“Our priority is to end this situation safely, and we encourage Caleb to give himself up to Police.

“In the meantime, we are doing all we can to minimise the disruption to the community, and a welfare centre has been set up at the Cloverlea Tavern on Tremaine Ave, to provide community support for anyone who needs it. Police staff are on site there to assist members of the public with any questions or concerns they may have.”

Cloverlea School and Cloverlea Kindergarten also remain closed today as a precaution, after staff and students were successfully evacuated yesterday.

“Residents inside the cordons are asked to remain vigilant and keep their properties safe, and secure their doors and windows.”

Caleb Kovaleski is described as a Caucasian male, thin to medium build and approximately 178cm tall.

Anyone who sees someone matching this description, any suspicious activity or behaviour, or who has any concerns, is asked to ring Police immediately on 111.

Police are also seeking a stolen silver Ford Telstar/Mazda 626 hatchback with a sunroof. If anyone sees a vehicle matching this description they are asked to contact Police immediately.
