Climbing fatality in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park

Canterbury Police can confirm that the female climber who was airlifted from Mt Cook National Park this morning has died.

Inspector Dave Gaskin says a helicopter was deployed after a beacon was set off by a climbing party this morning.  “The helicopter recovered the female climber who had fallen 300m from the slopes of the Footstall.  She was taken to the Aoraki Mt Cook Rescue Centre where she has subsequently died.”

The death has been referred to the Coroner.  No further details will be released until formal identification and the process to inform next of kin has been completed.

No further details will be released prior to the next update which will is likely to be made after 4pm this afternoon.
