At around 1.45pm this afternoon a man was working on a driveway at his residential property in Lucas Heights, Paremoremo.
He was driving a 1.5 tonne roller to compact loose shingle on the driveway.
A 2 year-old child from the address was struck by the roller as the driver reversed.
The child was rushed to Starship Hospital but tragically died soon after.
A Police Serious Crash Unit investigation is now underway.
"We're looking into how this tragedy occurred. The driver is a relative of the child and what I can say is that he's absolutely distraught. He and the child's family are being supported by Victim Support" says Constable Paul Hayward, Waitemata Serious Crash Unit.
It is too soon as this stage to say whether the driver will be charged and any decision on this will not be made for at least several weeks.
The name of the child is not expected to be released today and no further details will be released tonight.
