Dunedin Police have today arrested and charged a 19 year old man with six offences in relation to a incident on 29 July 2015 which resulted in a vehicle crash on the corner of Stafford and Hope Streets. The charges include manslaughter, failing to ascertain injury following a fatal crash, theft, and three of reckless driving causing injury.
The male appeared in the Dunedin District Court today and has been remanded on bail. He is next to appear on 9 February 2016.
At the time of the crash the offending vehicle, containing six people, was fleeing from a petrol drive off committed at the BP Service Station on Cumberland Street minutes before. The crash resulted in three passengers receiving serious injuries and another passenger, an 18 year-old Invercargill woman, dying at the scene.
The offending vehicle failed to give way at the intersection resulting in a T-bone crash with a second vehicle that was driving south on Stafford Street. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. The driver and sole occupant of the second vehicle, a 55 year-old male, received minor injuries and has been cleared of any fault.
The three injured persons are recovering but are still experiencing ongoing affects as a result of their injuries.
As the matter is now before the courts, Police are unable to comment further.
