Charges laid following fatal crash in Masterton

1 min read

Police have now charged a 14 year old male with driving offences relating to the crash that claimed the lives of two 15 year old males on Sunday morning.

The young person appeared in Masterton District Court this morning charged with Driving While Forbidden, Failing to Stop for Police and Unlawfully Gets in to a Stolen Motor Vehicle.  He was remanded in to the custody of Child, Youth and Family to reappear on 11 February. Further charges may follow.

Acting Wairarapa Area Commander, Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton, expressed his condolences to those affected by Sunday’s incident.

“The loss of two young people is always a tragedy.  Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those involved.

“It is important, at this time, that people allow the Police investigation process to run its course.

“We are dealing with extremely vulnerable and emotional young people who are struggling to come to terms with what has happened.

“We are further supporting the community by deploying additional staff to Featherston, where the young people were from.

“This is a sad reminder to us all about the fragility of human life and how a decision made in a split moment can have tragic consequences.

“I hope that as a community we can pull together and learn from this to prevent the needless loss of young lives on our roads,” said Senior Sergeant Sutton.
