Canterbury Police would like to thank Canadian tourist Genevieve FORCIER for contacting them after a media appeal this morning (14 December 2014).
Ms FORCIER confirmed that she met a French tourist called Celine while tramping route 12 in Arthurs Pass. They are understood to have left the track together and Police have received reports of someone, possibly Celine, hitching a ride from Cora Lynn Station back to Arthurs Pass on 10 December 2014.
Police have also received some calls suggesting Celine may have been heading south, but so far these sightings have not been verified.
Due to language difficulties the only description so far of Celine is that she is in her mid twenties. Police intend talk to Genevieve again tomorrow through a translator.
Police encourage Celine or anyone who knows where she may be to contact Police on 03 363 7670 or message them through their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ChristchurchPolice .
Alternatively you can provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
This is a timely reminder for some top tips if you’re planning a tramp this summer:
• let someone know where you are going and when you intend returning
• let them know you have returned
• if you’re staying in a hut always write your intentions in the hut book
• hire/carry a Personal Locator Beacon so you can call for help if you get into difficulties
• always check the long-range weather forecast before you set off
• take enough supplies in case your return is delayed
