Canterbury Police District Pay Parade and award ceremony recognises police staff and members of the public, outlining courageous acts, diligent investigations and selfless service to the community.

Police staff will be joining together in Christchurch on Wednesday (3 December 2014) for Canterbury’s first Pay Parade in over 30 years.

District Commander for Canterbury Police, Superintendent Gary Knowles, says  “Police staff across our District pull together as one extended team and today is an opportunity to demonstrate this sense of unity.   We are proud to serve the community and that shared sense of pride enables us to make the District a safe place for everyone.

The tradition of the Pay Parade comes from the requirement for Police officers to march to the local magistrate's office every fortnight in their dress uniform and pass inspection before getting their pay packet.

The parade will set off from Rolleston Ave at 1.30pm and proceed along Worcester Blvd to the Christchurch City Council offices.  Police Commissioner Mike Bush and The Mayor, Lianne Dalziel, will inspect the Parade before Superintendent Knowles takes the dias and explains the significance of the medals that will be awarded today.

25 staff will receive medals, badges, star and clasps recognising long service and good conduct for between 14 and 42 years working for New Zealand Police.  The Commissioner will present two Gold Merit Awards and the District Commander will present eight Commendation Certificates including three to non-Police staff and one Certificate of Promotion.

Canterbury Police encourage members of the public to come along to see the Parade, which will include Police dogs and the St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band.
