Canterbury Police looking for missing tramper in Arthurs Pass

1 min read

Canterbury Police received reports from DOC that a French tourist known only as Celine was two days late in returning from a tramp on route 12.  Celine is understood to have left a note with her sleeping bag on 8th December 2014 at Arthurs Pass Backpackers saying she planned to tramp route 12 (Cass Saddle) and expected to return in 3 days time to pick it up.  She has not returned to collect it.

Yesterday (13 December 2014) Canterbury Police SAR checked the huts along the route where it appears Celine made hut entries with a Canadian tourist, Genevieve FORCIER, until the last hut where only FORCIER has written her intentions.  It is unknown whether they walked out together.

Canterbury Police are keen to talk to FORCIER as she may be able to help them confirm Celine’s movements and whether she is safe.  They have also left messages with FORCIER’s family.

If you are Celine or FORCIER, or you know where they are, please contact Police on 03 363 7670 or message them through their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ChristchurchPolice .

Alternatively you can provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This is a timely reminder for anyone planning a tramp to let someone know where you are going, when you intend returning and when you are back.  If you’re staying in a hut always write your intentions in the hut book.  Police also recommend carrying a Personal Locator Beacon when you’re heading into the mountains/high country so that you can call for assistance if you get into difficulties.  Always check the weather forecast before you set off and take enough supplies in case your return is delayed.
