On 13 January Wanaka Police arrested a 21 year old male for burglary and theft after a search warrant was executed at a Plantation Road address.
During the last week of December and early January a number of houses and a theft from a motor vehicle were reported. These offences were in and around the Plantation, Hedditch, and Little Street locations. All of the offending was in the early hours of the morning.
The offender is appearing in the Queenstown District Court on 6 charges of burglary and a theft charge.
Police believe there may be other victims who have not realised their houses or cars may have been entered. We are urging residents, particularly in the area of Plantation Road, to check their vehicles and see if they have been entered or anything is missing.
“We’d like to remind residents that burglary and car crime is about opportunity,” says Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell. “With this string of offending, every house was unlocked or insecure in some way”
“We urge all residents to take a few simple prevention steps by making sure their address is secure by utilising locks where available, to make sure vehicles are locked and valuables are out of sight, and to consider outdoor lighting.”
“Each of these steps ensures your property is less likely to be targeted by opportunistic thieves.”
As this particular matter is now before the courts, police are unable to provide any further details.
