West Coast Police and Fire Service Investigators investigating a fire in a shed at Karangarua near Franz Josef in Westland overnight have discovered human remains in the rubble.
The fire was reported about 3am and the shed had been completely destroyed by that time.
A vehicle was located outside the shed raising concerns that there may be someone inside the building.
A scene examination is under way. The investigators are working to establish the cause of the fire and to identify the deceased person.
A post mortem examination will establish the cause of death.
