Police investigating the death of a man, believed to be a 54 year-old Caucasian of no fixed abode, want possible witnesses to the attack on him to contact the investigation team.
Acting Detective Inspector John Sutton says officers have spoken to a number of people who were in the Myers Park and Mayoral Drive vicinity at about the time of the attack between 11.20 and 11.30pm which resulted in the man's death later in hospital.
"However, we understand that three Asian people - two men and a woman - were also nearby when the incident occurred and we'd like to identify and speak with them to determine whether they have any information that might assist us locate a man seen leaving the park in the direction of Karangahape Rd at about 11.30pm.
"It's important these people make contact with the investigation team at Auckland Central Police Station on 09 302 6516 or anonymously on Crimestoppers - 0800 555 111. We can provide assistance if interpreters are needed."
Mr Sutton said next of kin of the deceased man were notified of his death this morning but that formal identification needs to take place before his name can be released.
"What we do know is that, for the past few weeks the deceased had been staying with an associate at an Epsom address but, prior to that, he had been a street and park dweller in and around the city.
"I am confident that last night's attack is totally unrelated to the July 31 fatal attack on 42 year-old Edwin John Linder in Mills Lane. The person we believe is responsible for that attack has been arrested, charged and is in custody."
Myers Park is still closed to members of the public while a scene examination is being carried out. A post-mortem examination of the deceased is currently underway and it's hoped his name can be released after he's been formally identified later today.
Police want any information about a person, believed to be male wearing a cream coloured top and dark trousers, seen leaving Myers Park at about 11.30pm last night.
