Dunedin Police has today (Thursday 24 November) concluded a month-long operation in relation to a large firearms burglary which occurred in the city on 25 October 2016.
As part of the investigation, five search warrants were executed at residential addresses in Dunedin and one in the Auckland area. This was in addition to other warrants executed in recent weeks in Dunedin, Gore and Christchurch.
As a result of today’s police action, two Dunedin men aged 38 and 39 have been arrested and charged with burglary and numerous firearms related offences. The 38-year-old is also being investigated in relation to being in possession of methamphetamine for supply.
A woman aged 34 has also been charged with being an accessory after the fact in relation to the same burglary.
All three will appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow, Friday 25 November 2016.
To date, Police have recovered five firearms and approximately 3,000 rounds of ammunition that were taken in the burglary. There are still 23 firearms outstanding.
Enquiries are continuing in an attempt to locate the unrecovered firearms and Police cannot rule out further arrests in relation to this matter.
“It is of great concern that some of the firearms stolen may have ended up in the hands of criminal gangs throughout New Zealand and Police will continue to put a lot of effort into attempting to recover them,” says Detective Sergeant Dave Nelson.
