At approximately 8.10am Christchurch Police were called to a suspicious vehicle on Ferry Road.
When Police approached the driver fled in the van, hitting a Police patrol car as he drove away.
Police followed the vehicle around the Woolston and Opawa suburbs.
The offending driver hit several Police vehicles before eventually coming to a stop on Hawford Road, Opawa, where he was arrested.
He faces a charge of aggravated failing to stop.
Further charges are likely.
