Wellington police attended a Mayday Protest that resulted in eight arrests.
The protest involved a concert in Cuba Street attended by around 150 people who then marched through the city targeting various multinational corporations.
The group disrupted traffic, forced the temporary closure of a number of corporate buildings and caused damage to some of the buildings.
Wellington Area Controller, Inspector Marty Grenfell described the protest as "an unorganised rabble who had no regard for the rights and safety of others".
"There was a disturbing militant element amongst the group who were prepared to break the law", he said.
Members of the public were forced off footpaths, traffic was halted and property was damaged throughout the course of the protest.
Those arrested have been charged with disorderly behaviour, assaulting police and an act endangering public safety. They will be appearing in the Wellington District Court next week.
