The body of Mr Shayne Sime is still at the scene of the shooting at Burnside, Christchurch as police begin a very comprehensive and wide inquiry. It is not known when his body will be removed.
"Given the time of year and the weather the inquiry could take longer as daylight hours are at their shortest," says Detective Superintendent Brett Kane who is overseeing the police inquiry. "There is quite a lot of scene work."
The trajectory of the one of the firearms used by Mr Sime is believed to be very wide and could have been in a 360 degrees arc for up to 6 - 7km distance. Anyone who may discover what could be bullet damage to their house or property is asked to contact police. A mail drop will be made in the immediate area to advise those living close.
Those residents evacuated from their homes last night are being accommodated by family, friends or in local motels. Wadhurst Place and part of Guildford Street are still cordoned and likely to be so for some days.
There are about 40 Canterbury police officers working on the inquiry plus specialist staff. Staff from other areas will be brought in when necessary. An ESR projectile expert is working with the team.
