A man taken home by Hamilton Police after being found driving with excess breath alcohol was found behind the wheel for a second time just over two hours later.
Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said the man was originally stopped on Grey St Hamilton East about 11.30pm Sunday.
"Officers noticed his car being driven without any headlights on so pulled him over, it was then they noticed the man showing signs of being intoxicated.
"Breath tested the man blew a result of 703mgms, the legal limit being 400mgms. With his licence suspended and being forbidden to drive for 12 hours the man was taken home by Police and his car keys handed to his wife, the joint owner of the car."
Despite the man and his wife being informed of his pending court action, driving ban and license suspension the urge to get behind the wheel was too much and the man was found behind the wheel again at about 1.50am yesterday.
"He was stopped on Firth St and arrested for driving while suspended and forbidden, put through another breath test the man was still over the limit with a result of 479mgm," said Mr Tooman.
"Unfortunately this is a too regular an event encountered by our staff involving a small number of recidivist drink drivers who have the potential to cause damage far exceeding their number."
Mr Tooman said while it was accepted alcohol impaired peoples driving ability it could be argued this case was a clear example of how it seriously impaired peoples decision making as well.
