Applicant for the force shows the right stuff in rescue

1 min read

Hamilton Police believe an applicant for the force has already demonstrated he has the right stuff, crediting him for being directly responsible for the saving of a woman's life on a City bridge during an incident overnight.

The 26-year-old was driving home from work about 10.25pm when he noticed a woman standing on a railing of the Boundary Rd bridge with a teddy bear under her arm looking like she was about to jump.

Stopping his car the man ran to the railing and wrapped his arms around the woman preventing her from jumping and impacting on the ground below.

The driver of a second car that stopped raised the alarm with Police.

Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton said the woman was known to Police and it is likely that had she seen a patrol car approaching she would have jumped.

"There's no doubt in the minds of the responding staff members that this man's actions were directly responsible in preventing a tragedy and we will be looking at the appropriate way of recognising his man's actions."
