North Shore Police say they have positive leads in their search for two occupants who abandoned a stolen vehicle in the mudflats at Beachhaven early yesterday. The vehicle's three occupants were seen to enter the water. One male occupant was later captured in Greenhithe.
Police issued a description yesterday of two persons whom they believe may be able to assist them with their enquiries into an incident in Takapuna in which a male police officer was injured by a speeding vehicle. A police pursuit was in progress at the time.
North Shore Area Commander Inspector Les Paterson says a number of South Auckland addresses were visited by police this morning as part of the inquiry.
"However there is uncertainty about the female and her whereabouts. As a precautionary action the Police Dive Squad has been called in to assist us. The specialist unit is searching inshore waters of the Greenhithe peninsula.
"The squad has been joined in the search by staff from the police maritime unit. The search began an hour ago at high tide. There has been speculation as to whether or not the female did make it safely out of the water," he said
"A 28 year old unemployed male of South Auckland is appearing in the North Shore District Court today. The man who was also an occupant in the speeding car was arrested yesterday during a search of the Greenhithe peninsula," Inspector Paterson said.
The injured police officer is likely to be released from hospital later this week.
