Search continues for wanted man

1 min read

The public is unlikely to be confronted by a man wanted by police, reassures Snr Sgt Stewart Munro.

"The public should not panic. If he is not cornered or confronted, Stewart is not likely to be a danger to the public," says Snr Sgt Munro. "He is more likely to be a danger to the Police. However if anyone sees him they should dial 111 immediately."

The search for William Stewart in Mid Canterbury moved to Lyttelton Harbour basin after he was seen by a police patrol in Governors Bay early this morning. Stewart then left the alleged stolen farm bike he was riding and took off into the hills.

Despite a search involving AOS, general duties staff and a helicopter he eluded police.

"It was just about 4am and dark and the terrrain is very steep," says Snr Sgt Stewart Munro. "He is still committing a large number of burglaries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately- dial 111.
