Annual Race Unity Speech Award at RNZPC next week

2 min read

Twelve senior students from Wellington secondary schools will compete in the regional heat of the 2009 Race Unity Speech Award held at The Royal NZ Police College (RNZPC) on Wednesdy evening, 11 March. The competition, initiated by the NZ Baha'i community in 2001, is held in support of Race Relations Day each year and is strongly supported by the NZ Police, the Human Rights Commission and the Office of Ethnic Affairs. It is open to students in years 11-13 and encourages participants to consider issues surrounding race relations in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Venue: Theatre 1, RNZPC, Papakowhai Rd, Porirua

Date: Wednesday 11 March

Time: 7:00pm - 9:30pm

The NZ Police is committed to reducing both the incidence and the effects of crime and sees its involvement in the award as supporting its ethnic strategy of deterring offences that incite racial disharmony and promoting more harmonious race relations. District Commander Superintendent Pieri Munro will be representing the Wellington District on the judging panel.

The Topic for 2009

"Good neighbours come from all races and cultures", reflects the theme for Race Relations Day. It also relates to a quote from the Baha'i writings:

"If you meet those of a different race and colour from yourself, do not mistrust them and withdraw yourself into your shell of conventionality, but rather be glad and show them kindness."

"Be worthy of the trust of (your) neighbour and look upon him with a bright and friendly face."

Speech contestants must consider the quotes above as well as the following questions:

What is your experience of being neighbourly with other cultures?

What is a "good neighbour" and what practical steps could you take to be a good neighbour to somebody of a different race or culture? - How could you "break the ice?"

What personal qualities do you need?

What are the benefits of good neighbours?

How can you encourage others to be good neighbours?

The winner of the Wellington heat will compete in the national semi-finals on Friday 3 April in Auckland. The final will also take place in Auckland, on Saturday 4 April.
