Police express sorrow over shooting

1 min read

Acting Police Commissioner Lyn Provost has expressed her deep regret over the death of Halatau Naitoko in yesterday's Auckland motorway shooting.

"This is an absolute tragedy. Police all round the country are saddened by the outcome of yesterday's events. On behalf of all our staff, I'd like to extend my sympathy to Mr Naitoko's parents, family and friends on the loss of a much loved young man."

Mrs Provost said police staff also feel for their fellow officers, who were put in a difficult and dangerous position by the alleged offender.

She said a robust investigation process is in place, with an out of district Detective Inspector heading the Police investigation team.

"The officers will be conducting a thorough and professional investigation. We will also carry out a full debrief."

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is carrying out its own independent inquiry.

Mrs Provost said the New Zealand Police extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Mr Naitoko.
