Wellingtonians heading out of town for Anniversary Weekend or returning home from summer holidays are urged to be vigilant and patient when on the roads over the next few days.
Inspector Peter Baird, Wellington District Road Policing Manager, expects that many will head out of town tomorrow afternoon or Saturday morning, with large volumes of returning city bound traffic expected on Wellington Anniversary Day, Monday 19 January.
"It's the last chance for some people to get away before schools start for the year," he says. "We're asking people to give themselves plenty of time to reach their destinations, to be patient in lines of traffic and to avoid heat and fatigue.
"Make sure you and your vehicle are well prepared for the trip, especially if you are towing boats or caravans," he says. "Keep your focus on the road, and factor in some all important rest stops for everyone in your care."
New Zealand Transport Agency Central Operations Manager Mr Mark Owen said the passing lanes at Lindale and Waikanae on State Highway 1 will be closed from midday tomorrow, 16 January and mid afternoon on Saturday, 17 January, depending on traffic flows. The passing lane north of Te Horo will also be closed during the same period.
Southbound passing lanes north of Otaki will be close on Monday, 19 January from midday until 9pm, depending on traffic volumes. There may be some adjustments in timings.
Closing the passing lanes produces a steadier flow of traffic and reduces potential conflict at merge points.
Inspector Baird says police will be monitoring speed, use of seat belts and restraints, and checking on alcohol and other high risk offending such as dangerous overtaking.
"Slower drivers, especially those towing boats, also have a responsibility to pull over and let traffic flow," he says.
"We want you to enjoy your holiday and return home safely. Avoid fatigue because tired drivers are unsafe drivers," he says.
