Hamilton Police investigating an incident that left an elderly pedestrian critically injured are appealing for witness.

Sergeant Phil Ruddell of the Hamilton Strategic Traffic Unit said Police were called to Grey St near the Hamilton East Primary School about 11.30am.

"A man aged in his 70s has been crossing the road from west to east when he has been struck down by a southbound car.

"The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is being interviewed by Police, his car has been seized and is currently undergoing forensic analysis," said Mr Ruddell.

To assist investigators in finding out exactly what happened Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"We also want to hear from the owners of any cars parked in the area that may have been damaged, we've already located one car that was and it may be some time before other owners return to their vehicles and notice any damage."

Anyone with any information on this morning's incident is asked to contact Constable Craig Aplin at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.
