Police investigating a fatal road crash near Wanganui last month are making a renewed appeal as information suggests there is at least one other driver who is a crucial witness and needs to be traced.
Georgina Maud Mareikura, a 59-year-old woman from Palmerston North, was killed when her Honda collided head-on with a Holden at Marybank on Saturday, November 29. She had been travelling towards Wanganui on SH3.
The driver of the Holden travelling in the opposite direction, towards Palmerston North, was a woman in her 40s who remains in Hutt Hospital, Wellington, in a serious but stable condition.
Enquiries by investigators suggest that there were three cars in total travelling towards Palmerston North at the time of the crash. The first in the line is believed to have swerved to avoid a collision with the Honda and then continued on its journey. The second in the line was the Holden that collided with the Honda. The driver of the third car in the line has told police what he witnessed.
Although police have spoken to a number of people, the driver of the car at the front of the line that swerved to avoid a collision does not appear to be among those witnesses. The car is believed to be an old style, dark-coloured Nissan and police are asking the driver of that car to come forward and tell them what they recall of events that morning.
