At approximately 9.45 pm on Thursday 30 October Kapiti police engaged in a pursuit of a vehicle north of Waikanae.
The vehicle had been seen earlier by a police patrol driving on the wrong side of the road without lights in Waikanae. After being seen by the police car the offending vehicle drove off and crashed into another vehicle. It then rammed the police car before driving off.
The vehicle was seen a short time later by another police patrol and the vehicle drove off at speed northwards from Waikanae along SH1.
As it was being followed by the police car the offending driver lost control on a moderate bend on SH1 north of Waikanae near Marycrest, Te Horo. It crossed the centre line and collided head on with a southbound vehicle.
The offending driver was thrown clear of the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital.
Two females in the southbound car both received serious injuries and were trapped in their vehicle before being freed and flown to Hospital.
All three injured persons remain in hospital overnight
SH1 was closed for approximately two hours while the Wellington Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised.
