The man killed as he was leaving his place of work late yesterday afternoon was 44 year-old Devonport resident and IAG broker manager, Austin Bernard Hemmings. He worked in IAG House, which is adjacent to the BNZ Towers and which backs onto Mills Lane.
Mr Hemmings came to the aid of a woman who was allegedly being assaulted by a 45 year-old man who was subsequently arrested by the Armed Offenders Squad at about 4.30 this morning. He will appear in the Auckland District Court charged with male assaults female today.
The woman did no know Mr Hemmings. He leaves a wife and three teenaged children. The family moved from Hamilton to Auckland six months ago.
Officer in charge of Mr Hemmings' homicide investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley, says his body will be removed from the scene today and it's hoped a post-mortem examination will be able to get underway this afternoon or tomorrow.
"As a result of our investigations overnight, we have secured another four scenes at various locations in the metropolitan area so it will take some time to fully examine all the scenes but we will prioritise in order to cause the least amount of inconvenience to members of the public."
