Two formal investigations are underway after this morning's fatal shooting of a Police Officer in Mangere - a criminal investigation and an internal Police inquiry in to policy, practices and procedures.

The deceased officer, Sergeant Don Wilkinson, 46 of Waimauku, was killed by a single shot to the upper body this morning.

His colleague, 44 year-old Sergeant, was shot several times and assaulted before being removed from the scene by ambulance.

Neither of the two officers was wearing ballistic armour however the surviving officer was wearing stab resistant body armour. Both officers were carrying out their core roles as Technical Support Officers in Mangere early this morning when the shootings occurred.

Four children were present at the Hain Ave address where the vehicle which was to have a tracking device covertly installed was. The youngest three of them have been removed from the address and are with extended family members.

The Hain Ave address, along with the Earlsworth Rd scene, is still cordoned off. Police have not yet been able to determine whether there is any evidence of a clandestine laboratory or associated activities at Hain Ave. Full scene examinations are yet to get underway.
