Operation Mainland release 2

27 July 2008

Forensic examiners are currently at two cordoned off scenes in the small community of Waharoa, north of Matamata, following a fatal drive-by shooting this morning.

Waikato Crime Services Manager, Detective Inspector Peter Devoy, said the investigation into the shooting of a 28-year-old Matamata man was titled Operation Mainland.

"The investigation team comprises about 20 Waikato Police staff assisted by ESR forensic examiners from Auckland," he said.

Police were called to the scene of the shooting on McGowan St just after 1am.

"A car has pulled up opposite a group standing outside a McGowan St home, a volley of shots were fired by someone in the car and our victim has been hit a number of times in the upper body," said Mr Devoy.

The car drove off but reappeared a short time later and a second volley of shots was fired, fortunately no-one else was hit during this second attack.

Police and ambulance staff were called to the scene but the victim died of his wounds at the scene.

Though Police are currently speaking to three people they believe are linked to the attack a firearm has yet to be recovered.

Police are asking anyone with information on events prior to the attack, the shooting or events following to make contact with the Matamata Police Station on 07 8887117.

A press conference will be held outside the Matamata Police Station at 3pm today, those media intending to be present are asked to contact the Waikato Police District Communications Manager to confirm.
