29 April 2008

Police are appealing to trucking companies to check their vehicles following a fatal crash on SH1 between Taupiri and Huntly this morning.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash which claimed the life of a 17-year-old Huntly man.

His name has not yet been released.

Initial indications on the cause of the crash are that as a northbound Toyota Landcruiser passed a truck and trailer unit in a passing lane it collided with the 17-year-old man's southbound Nissan car that had crossed the centreline about 7.58am.

Sergeant Mark Toomey of Ngaruawahia Police appealed for northbound truck drivers in the area at the time of the crash to contact Police.

"We're particularly keen to hear from the driver of a curtain-sided truck that was being passed by the 4x4 at the time of the crash."

"We doubt he would've seen the crash unless he was looking in his rear view mirrors but we've been told the Nissan was swerving across the road before the crash and he may have seen it lose control before the collision."

Anyone who was driving a northbound truck in the area at the time or who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Huntly Police on 07 828 7560.
