Waikato Police are urging motorists to show patience while driving across the region following a fatal crash in and area of roadworks overnight.
The crash happened on SH2 northwest of Athenree about 11.55pm when the female driver of a car lost control on a lengthy area of road works.
Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said it appeared speed was a major factor in the crash.
"Where the crash happened was a straight piece of road that was being repaired so it had a gravel surface, hence the speed restriction.
"It appears the car has left the road to the left and struck a road side bank," he said.
The female driver was taken by ambulance to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries while a male front seat passenger suffered minor injuries.
A 21-year-old Katikati male travelling as a rear seat passenger in the car was killed in the crash, his name has not yet been released.
Mr Tooman said with the Waikato hosting the Hamilton 400 larger than normal traffic flows can be expected as people return home tomorrow.
He asked people to exercise caution and patience.
"There's quite a bit of roadworks throughout the district and we ask people to observe the speed restriction signs which are there for a reason.
"Likewise those travelling on the motorways after 3 days of high speed racing action may be tempted to put the pedal to the metal but we advise caution, we want everyone to arrive home safely and in one piece."
