Police are beginning a 12 month trial of three different operational trousers for uniformed staff as part of an open tender process.
Ninety-two frontline staff from Northland, Central, Wellington and Southern Police Districts will spend the next four seasons testing the trousers for functionality, comfort and durability.
The three types of trousers on trial are the same colour as those currently worn by staff, and are in three different design configurations utilising various blends of materials, says Acting National Manager of Operations, Inspector Chris Scahill.
"We ultimately want a trouser that offers the best comfort, durability and versatility for our staff across the country who perform a very diverse range of roles every day. To that end, the trousers will be reviewed in all weather conditions, situations, and seasons for extensive lengths of time to find the best 'fit' for our staff into the future," Mr Scahill says.
The trial follows a call from front line staff to have a more functional trouser that better meets their needs. The material used in current Police trousers – a 70% wool and 30% polyester blend – has not changed for over 20 years.
"This is a great opportunity for our frontline staff to have input and provide feedback about a piece of our uniform that could improve comfort and functionality," says Mr Scahill.
Every four months, the officers will complete a survey on their experience and provide feedback. The final results will be passed to the Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall for nationwide consideration.
