A man aged in his 70s has died in a motor vehicle crash near Kaiapoi this afternoon.
The crash occurred at approximately 1.35pm today at the intersection of Giles Road, South Eyre Road and Tram Road, west of State Highway 1 near Kaiapoi.
Police say initial enquiries indicate that the deceased was driving south on Giles Road and has travelled through the controlled intersection with Tram Road.
His car was struck by a car travelling west on Tram Road, and then hit again by a following truck.
Road conditions at the time were wet and slippery, police say.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. No other injuries have been reported.
Road closures are in place around the intersection, and are expected to remain in place until 4pm today.
The name of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
