Attacker sought after attempted robbery

Christchurch Police are appealing for information to help find an offender who assaulted a woman during an attempted robbery in Shirley last night.

Detective Sergeant Joel Syme says a woman in her twenties was attacked in Sabina Street at about 6.30pm last night [Wednesday 5 June].

"An unidentified man ran up behind the woman and wrestled her to the ground," he says. "He assaulted her and tried to take her handbag," he says.

"Fortunately the man was disturbed by a passing motorist who came to the victim's aid as the offender ran off - without the handbag."

The man is described as Caucasian, aged in his mid-twenties to mid-thirties, tall and of athletic build.

He was reported to be wearing a black hoodie with a white design or print, black beanie and black pants. The man also had a white scarf across his mouth and nose during the attack.

Detective Sergeant Syme says the woman suffered only minor injuries. "During the attempted robbery she has bitten the offender's hand, so he may have a small injury to one of his hands.

"We would like to speak to anyone who may know who this man is, or who may have seen someone fitting his description in the area at the time.

"Police would also like to speak with the male motorist who stopped to help the young woman last night."
