Arrests in assault and weekend dairy robbery

1 min read

A 21-year old man will appear in Christchurch District Court this morning on charges relating to an assault outside Robbie's Bar in Normans Road on Thursday night [23 May].

Police executed a search warrant at a Christchurch address yesterday [Sunday 26 May] and a number of items linking the offenders to the assault were recovered.

A short time later the man was arrested without incident at a separate address and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

One other male sought in connection with the incident is yet to be located, however Police say he has been identified and expect to speak to him in the next few days.

In another incident, a 17-year old man has been arrested and charged with the aggravated robbery of a Linwood dairy last night [Sunday 27 May].

The man is reported to have entered the McGregor's Road Superette shortly after 7pm last night and presented a metal pipe at the female shop assistant.

The man demanded cash and was handed a sum of money. When a demand for more cash was refused he attacked the woman with the pipe, striking her twice and hitting her on the forearm and temple.

The offender fled the diary and discarded the metal pipe nearby. Investigators say the shop assistant was fortunate to have received only minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff.

The man was located at a nearby address shortly after the incident by Police carrying out a bail check.

The man has been held overnight in Police custody and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court this morning.
