Police Minister the Honourable Anne Tolley alongside Assistant Commissioner Nick Perry will present 47 Police and members of the public with various awards and medals at the Auckland Town Hall tomorrow morning.
The six-monthly ceremonies have been held by the Auckland City District for several years and are regarded as an appropriate way of recognising long service, good conduct and bravery of Police staff and members of the public who have assisted Police at times.
Among those receiving a District Commander's Certificate of Appreciation are two members of the public - Dylan Marta and Jannel Penman - who, when faced with a young man who intended to harm himself by jumping from the SkyWalk on Auckland's Sky Tower, ensured the safety of other participants in the initial stages of the drama.
Two attending officers, Constables Carl Day and Fred McGraw, will also receive the certificate in recognition of their actions throughout the five-hour ordeal which eventually saw the mentally unstable man safely removed from the danger area.
Jane Patterson of Herne Bay and Nagel Staff of Titirangi will each also receive a District Commander Certificate of Appreciation for their life-saving actions at Westhaven in March this year when they dragged a man from his sinking car after he drove it over the seawall into the Waitemata Harbour.
Several officers receive District Commander Commendations, including Detective Natasha Bryce of Glen Innes and Detective Constable Scott Middlemiss of Manukau for their work on a successful investigation and prosecution of a man who had, for several years, been criminally harassing hundreds of people in positions of authority through indecent, abusive and derogatory correspondence.
