Masterton CIB have charged a 25-year-old Masterton woman with making a false statement to Police after she called emergency services last Wednesday night [17 April], claiming to have been the victim of a sexual attack in Greytown.
The woman told Police that she had been at the 'Body Heat' male strip show, held at the Greytown Rugby club, and soon after leaving was approached by a male who she had met at the show.
She claimed the male sexually assaulted her.
Wairarapa Police began an extensive and time-consuming investigation which did not lead to any corroborative evidence being obtained.
The woman waited two days before contacting Police to advise that she had made up the story.
Detective Mike Smith says "It is always very disappointing to discover that people will waste a lot of Police time, including time of support agencies and medical services, knowing that information they give to us is completely fabricated.
"Complaints of this nature inevitably tie up a lot of resources and leave the community very concerned and doubting their own safety.
"I want to reassure the public that all complaints made to Police will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
"I also wish to remind those who make complaints to Police knowing that the information is false and misleading will face consequences".
