Christchurch Police are hopeful security camera images will help to identify a man who robbed an Ilam dairy last night.
The offender, who was captured by security cameras inside the store, assaulted a shop staff member with a piece of wood, but left empty-handed.
Detective Constable Nathan Lean says the man entered the Ilam Dairy on the corner of Ilam and Clyde Roads shortly after 9:30pm last night [Thursday 14 February].
"The man brandished a large piece of wood at a shop assistant and demanded cash," he says. "The offender then struck the shop assistant on the head and shoulder with the piece of wood - using such force that it broke in two.
"At that stage the offender has left the scene without any money."
Detective Constable Lean says the shop assistant suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff.
The offender is described as a male Caucasian aged at least 18, approximately 185cm (6ft 1in) tall, clean-shaven and of medium build, with tattoos on his left forearm.
At the time of the incident he was wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts with a white stripe, and bare feet.
