Police in Bay of Plenty District have been dealing with two serious incidents this morning, says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen.
At 5:18am, Kawerau police attended a home invasion burglary at an urban property. A man allegedly the address and went into the bedroom of a 32 year-old woman. She was asleep in her bedroom with other members of the household sleeping in an adjacent room.
The man sexually assaulted the woman before being forced off during a struggle. He then left the property and has not yet been located.
Police have completed a scene examination and an investigation is now under way. The victim described the intruder as a male Maori perhaps in his 30's.
Earlier this morning, at around 5:00am, Opotiki police responded to a report of assault and abduction in the town. A 17 year-old local female appears to have been involved in an altercation with three adult female suspects, who then pulled her into their vehicle.
The victim was set upon and suffered injuries to her face and body requiring medical treatment.
The attackers then allegedly drove the victim to a location outside the township and left her on the side of the road.
Staff from Opotiki and Whakatane began an investigation this morning and located three adult females who are being spoken to.
Investigations will continue today. Police seek information from anyone who may have been moving around the township during the early hours of this morning.
