Hamilton Police are crediting additional security measures employed by the owners of a food-market in the east of the City for thwarting burglars who broke into the store early this morning but left empty handed.
City Tactical Coordinator, Senior Sergeant Freda Grace, said officers were called to the business on the corner of Cameron Rd and Gadsby Pl about 2.15am.
"The business owner was at the store after responding to a burglar alarm when the alarm went off again and he phone Police.
"It appears the offenders forced entry into a storeroom but because of some strengthening of the rear door this caused them some delay. They were further frustrated by the inability to access the actual shop area because of additional security and fled the scene empty handed."
Ms Grace said Police believed the offenders were targeting cigarettes in the shop and the delays created by the layered security meant they were unsuccessful in their attempts.
"This morning's incident shows the benefits of investing in the target hardening of your home or business; here we had a location fitted with not only alarms but additional security measures that made it too hard for the offenders to get what they want.
"These security measures coupled with the notifying of Police allows us to respond in a timely manner and we are following up enquiries today on who may have been responsible."
