Waitakere Police have destroyed an organised theft ring involving retail outlets throughout Greater Auckland and other North Island localities.
Henderson CIB executed a number of search warrants at the weekend at residential properties and a storage unit in West Auckland. Numerous retail items were recovered by Police.
Police say their combined value exceeds $100,000.
Five adult females and an adult male are to appear in the Waitakere District Court today after their arrest late on Saturday. They are charged with participating in an organised criminal enterprise, receiving, and a raft of theft ex store offences.
The penalties for these offences range from five years imprisonment for participating in a criminal enterprise, to seven years imprisonment for theft ex store.
Operation OLAY has been a joint investigation by Waitakere Police and supermarket operators.
Detective Sergeant Eugene PICKETT of Henderson CIB says many retail outlets throughout New Zealand are currently experiencing increasing levels of stock loss due to theft.
"Cosmetics, skin care products and razor blades were among the popular items targeted by these alleged offenders."
"This investigation was initiated in November 2006 after it was discovered that a high volume of stolen products were being sold at local markets throughout Auckland and as far south as Hamilton."
"Its success reflects an ongoing commitment by Police working with supermarket operators to get tough on thieves who cause significant loss," he said.
Police say enquiries are continuing and more charges are anticipated.
