Fleeing Nelson driver in custody

1 min read

A Nelson man is in custody following a series of incidents today in which he fled police in a stolen car with a 20 month old baby onboard.

The man took both the child and the car from an address after a family violence incident about 1.30pm today.

Police first located the man on Main Road Stoke where he failed to stop and a pursuit ensured. The pursuit was called off after a short period.

Later in the afternoon the man was located parked at Appleby. A police officer negotiated with the man to hand over the baby before the man again fled.

He was next located on Main Road Hope about 4pm and apprehended with the use of road spikes.

A 27year old man will appear in Nelson District Court tomorrow on abduction and assault charges. Further charges are likely.
