Porirua Police have laid charges against the mother of the five-year-old Porirua girl who was admitted to Wellington Hospital on Tuesday 5 June with serious injuries.
On Thursday 7 June the girl's stepfather appeared in Porirua District Court charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the girl's head injuries. He was granted name suppression and was remanded in custody. He will next appear in Porirua District Court on 3 July.
The mother faces charges of assault with a weapon and cruelty to a child. Both charges relate to other injuries and not the head injury that led to the girl's hospital admission, says Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam. The mother will appear in Porirua District Court tomorrow, Tuesday 12 June.
"The girl's condition has continued to improve and she has been moved from the Intensive Care Unit to the children's ward of Wellington Hospital," says Detective Senior Sergeant Oxnam.
The girl and her two brothers have been placed in Child, Youth and Family care.
As the matter is now before the Court, Police cannot make any further comment.
